2011 Safety Standdown

From the Director, FAA Flight Standards
John Allen, Director, FAA Flight Standards
I am one of you—an airman.
That is why I am privileged to introduce and encourage your participation in the 2011 FAA Safety Team Safety Standdown. This year’s theme is Stand Up to Error, Stand Down for Safety and that is exactly what I am asking you to do. You can participate at the main Standdown on April 2 in Lakeland, at one of the more than 90 Standdown events around the country, through your perusal of FAA Safety Briefing magazine, or on this Web site.

Focus Areas

Positive Flight Attitude Positive Flight Attitude:
Keeping Your Standards High
Professionalism should characterize every action you take as a pilot. Approach every flight as if your life depends on it—because it does.

Going Beyond Preflight Going Beyond Preflight:
Perfecting Your Preflight Inspection
A proper preflight is always a crucial part of a safe flight. It’s more than using a checklist; a good preflight should test how well you know your aircraft and its systems.

En Route Cruise En Route Cruise:
Steering Clear of VFR into IMC
Pay attention and do the right thing, even when no one is looking. Precision piloting demands staying on altitude, on heading, and on task.

Maneuvering Flight Maneuvering Flight:
Slow, Steady, and Sure
Always remember that attention to airspeed is critical. Loss of control in maneuvering flight often results from inattention to airspeed.

Season for New Equipment
Spring cleaning your aircraft to get it ready after its winter hibernation may inspire thoughts of sprucing it up on the inside, too. If you’re considering updating your avionics, this article can get you started. “A New Perspective: Retrofit Market Is a Showplace for Avionics” (page 6)

Buyer Beware
Before you buy that new piece of equipment for your aircraft, there are a number of considerations to keep in mind. First, consider the intended mission for the new equipment. You must also determine if the system has been proven to meet applicable FAA certification requirements. If you’re in the market for new avionics, check this article for a few tips on making your selection. “Buyer Beware: Limitations of Uncertified Avionics Systems” (page 8)

Wondering About Your Medical?
Fatigue continues to be a hot topic in aviation. Dr. Warren Silberman, manager of FAA’s Aerospace Medical Certification Division, talks about obstructive sleep apnea in this installment of “Ask Medical Certification” (page 6).
