Roanoke Tower has installed and is now using a new Low Level Wind Shear Alert System (LLWAS). This system consists of seven stations located around the airport on monopole style poles. This system provides wind shear detection coverage out to two miles for a runway 6 approach, and 1 mile coverage for all other runway approaches. The system provides wind shear detection coverage for one mile for all runway departures.

Displays located in the TRACON and the Tower Cab show the two minute average for the airport winds, while the tower displays also have the capability to show wind speed and direction for each runway. Roanoke Tower does not have the capability to give a pilot the wind speed and direction at an individual remote site.
